The Crossed out Wheelie Bin Symbol

Appliance recycling _ Allsop Electrical Advice pagesThis symbol means that a product is classed as Electrical or Electronic Equipment (EEE) and SHOULD NOT be disposed of with other household or commercial waste at the end of its working life, but disposed of in accordance with the WEEE Directive. It is important to remember that some older electrical equipment may not have this symbol on it, however it is still subject to the requirements of the WEEE Directive.

Hazardous substances

Many items of Electrical or Electronic Equipment (EEE) contain amounts of one or more of the following hazardous substances: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.

These substances can be very detrimental to the environment if not treated correctly.

Since 1st July 2006 the use of these substances in new EEE is restricted to certain levels and is regulated under the RoHS directive.

The separate collection of Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) from other forms of waste is necessary in order to aid its environmentally sound recovery, diversion away from landfill and enable it to be recycled and any hazardous substances treated in order to minimize the impact on the environment.

WEEE should not be disposed of with any other forms of waste because this prevents recovery and recycling of re-useable materials, it also allows untreated hazardous substances which are harmful to the environment into landfill waste sites.

How you can help!

Here are a few things you can do help reduce the environmental impact of WEEE: If you have an appliance that still works but is no longer required you could donate it to a re-use charity many of  which make second hand appliances available at a reduced price.

Make sure that when you dispose of WEEE that you return it to the store where you have purchased the replacement from (providing that the store offers in-store take back) or take it to your local civic amenity site for safe disposal.
